A terror suspect nabbed at President Uhuru Kenyatta’s home in Gatundu was on Wednesday arraigned in court by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.
Said Mire Siyad who was arrested on Tuesday appeared before Resident Magistrate Edda Agade where the prosecution asked for more time to question him.
State Prosecutor Daniel Karori told the court that police are yet to establish Siyad’s motive but they believe he was on a surveillance mission for a terrorist attack.
Karori said that since Siyad was arrested on April 21 (Tuesday), police have not had adequate time to conduct investigations and require 15 days to complete the probe.
Pursuant to the brief investigation carried out, the suspect has other associates who are yet to be arrested.
Karori told the court that investigators require detailed extraction of mobile phone records to ascertain the nature of communication and contact persons.
Eight other terror suspects arrested in Nairobi – among them Omar Said Ahmed who police believe is involved in terrorism – also appeared before the court on Wednesday.
The prosecution told the court that Ahmed is said to be conducting radicalisation programmes for youths and has facilitated the disappearance of his son to join Al Shabaab.
Police will have to travel as far as West Pokot to collect more evidence against him before a decision is made to charge him.
The trial court ordered that the suspects be jointly held at Kilimani police station for a period of 15 days to allow police to carry out investigations into their activities.
